Employment History

October 2015 – present

Self-employed Transfer Pricing Expert

Uithoorn

  • As a self-employed transfer pricing expert, I provide transfer pricing assistance to multinational companies in a wide range of areas. I have a long-standing expertise with the many different aspects of transfer pricing and performed a significant number of projects for clients in various industries.

  • I successfully completed transfer pricing projects for my clients in the following areas:

    1. design of transfer pricing systems;

    2. preparation of transfer pricing documentation, including Master file and Local Country files;

    3. preparation of benchmark studies;

    4. BEPS risk assessment, including C-b-C reporting dry runs;

    5. assistance with transfer pricing audits by tax authorities;

    6. preparation of transfer pricing defence files;

    7. provision of transfer pricing training sessions;

    8. advice on the implementation of transfer pricing systems (including design of processes and controls);

    9. advice on the preparation of an RFP and proposal review;

    10. training of internal audit departments.

  • I work both on an ad interim (i.e. a number of days per week) and on a project basis. My clients are the large and midsized multinational companies, but also audit and tax consultancy firms.

February 2014 – September 2015

Senior Transfer Pricing Expert

Quantera Global, Amsterdam

  • I worked for Quantera Global as a self-employed person, assuming the same
    responsibilities as the Managing Directors of the company. In this respect I was-intera alia- responsible for commercial affairs (i.e., exploiting my own client portfolio and the acquisition of new clients), human resources and marketing. Obviously I executed and delivered the projects what we won, together with my team members.

  • I also spent considerable time and efforts to enhance the operational effectiveness of the company. I developed a process that described the entire range of activities, from the first customer contact and signing of the engagement letter to the project execution and time registration, invoicing process and cash collection. This process resulted in significant efficiencies and financial benefits.

  • In terms of new product development I focussed on offering solutions that closely relate to the latest OECD (discussion) papers, in particular those relating to documentation and country-by-country reporting. With our company we offered tailor made in-house solutions for multinationals as an answer to the increased compliance burden. We have also been investigating software solutions that could potentially support these in-house documentation efforts. Implementation and monitoring was an area of personal interest that we also offered to our clients in relation to the new OECD developments.

  • I think I may say that I was reasonably successful in acquiring and retaining clients. The feedback I got is that the work I performed for my clients was concise, technically sound, and accurate. In terms of relationships with my clients, I think it is fair to say that they were very satisfied with my services.

  • The feedback from my colleagues was that they value my technical knowledge. In addition, they valued my collegial attitude and team spirit.

May 2012 – January 2014

Director Transfer Pricing

Duff & Phelps, Amsterdam

  • At Duff & Phelps, I have been responsible for establishing the transfer pricing practice for the Amsterdam office. The job was a ‘greenfield activity’ in a valuation services environment. As of November 2012, Duff & Phelps acquired a niche transfer pricing practice in the US called Ceteris, allowing me to tap into a wealth of transfer pricing experience.

  • My role required significant commercial efforts such as business development (e.g., article writing, internal presentations, OECD commentaries), marketing (e.g., external presentations) and sales. Main target groups were quoted and non-quoted larger scale Dutch multinationals.

  • In addition, I had full management responsibility for the transfer pricing practice for items like finance, quality control, human resources and operations.

  • I offered the full suite of transfer pricing services. The close working relationship with my valuation colleagues provided me with an in depth knowledge of the interaction between valuation work (e.g., purchase price allocations or legal entity valuations) and transfer pricing. In addition, I gained a more in depth understanding in the field of financial services.

December 2007 – March 2012

Director Transfer Pricing

PwC, Amsterdam

  • During my employment at PwC I mainly focussed on implementation and processes & controls for transfer pricing purposes.

  • I developed and successfully rolled out an online transfer pricing ‘in control’ risk assessment tool. The tool mainly served as a marketing instrument, used in some 15 countries, attracting over 250 globally operating companies to complete the risk assessment.

  • In addition, I headed the development and sales of a wide variety of services around the so-called ‘Transfer Pricing Control Framework’, which provides a structured approach to implement and monitor a transfer pricing policy.

  • Due to my focus on implementation and processes & controls, I also carried responsibility for the transfer pricing support provided to the PwC audit colleagues (i.e., determining the uncertainties in relation to transfer pricing and the impact thereof on the tax position in the accounts).

  • I also operated as the linking pin between the transfer pricing practice and the colleagues responsible for the preparation of the corporate tax returns, in particular with respect to the implementation of Advance Pricing Agreements, and other particular questions that stemmed from a company’s transfer pricing policy.

January 2005 – November 2007

Director Transfer Pricing

LECG, Amsterdam

  • At LECG, we continued the activities of IntraPrice, now being part of a bigger organization. The move to LECG was for strategic reasons and allowed us access to a more professional organization, more funds, more skilled staff and a large international client base.

  • Due to nature of LECG’s core business I have been involved in a significant number of valuation and litigation engagements that had intersections with transfer pricing.

  • Like with IntraPrice, I remained responsible for sales and operational execution of the work. Marketing of the transfer pricing activities was done by way of seminars, articles and alike. Transfer pricing projects were team efforts, mainly performed with the support from the ‘pool’ of skilled economists in the London office.

August 2000 – December 2004

Founder/Director

IntraPrice, Amsterdam

  • I founded IntraPrice, which was the first niche market player in the transfer pricing area in the Dutch market. A co-founder performed the marketing of the company, where I brought the technical skills to the table.

  • The idea was to offer ‘tailored’ transfer pricing services to in-house tax departments. IntraPrice wanted to be part of the in-house tax department instead of being considered as a consultancy firm.

  • The above philosophy resulted in a large number of engagements where in-house, practical support was required. This gave me the opportunity to obtain a deep understanding of the implementation of transfer pricing policies in the day-to-day operations of multinationals.

  • After being in existence for 4 years, IntraPrice reached the number of 3 partners and 2 employees. Our reputation in the market was that of a reputable, well established transfer pricing consultancy firm. Our client base was a mix of large and medium size multinationals and tax advisory and law firms.

  • The responsibilities I had were sales, marketing, human resource, technical development, quality control and finance.

August 1997 – August 2000

Senior Manger Transfer Pricing

Ernst & Young Consulting

  • At Ernst & Young I joined a much bigger team, which included US transfer pricing specialists. In addition, there was a close working relationship with a number of management consultants. This provided me with significant new insights and experiences.

  • As a transfer pricing specialist I had a close working relationship with the Tax Effective Supply Chain Management team and as such I was engaged in large scale international transfer pricing projects. I carried responsibilities for the technical execution of the projects, as well as internal (e.g. with VAT colleagues) and international coordination.

  • I managed teams on a wide variety of projects (ranging from design and documentation to audit defence) in different industries.

  • I took on various (management) responsibilities for the transfer pricing group, such as human resources, quality control and technical meetings.

February 1992 – July 1997

Assistant International Corporate Taxation/(Senior) Manager Transfer Pricing

Coopers & Lybrand Consulting

  • I started off as international tax advisor dealing with corporate tax structuring and related tax issues, like withholding tax and VAT.

  • Gained a lot of broad tax knowledge in those years, also further enhanced by inhouse courses, as well as courses provided by the Dutch Association of Tax Advisors (NOB).

  • Due to my economic background, I was also largely engaged in the preparation and review of corporate income tax returns. This made me understand how tax advice provided would be incorporated in the corporate income tax return once implemented.

  • In 1994, I moved to the transfer pricing group because my educational background showed a better fit with transfer pricing than with corporate tax structuring. At that time I had quite some exposure to all sorts of transfer pricing work due to the fact that the team only consisted of me and 1 other person. This resulted in a steep learning curve.

  • Examples of transfer pricing engagements I conducted are: design of policies, preparation of documentation, transfer pricing audits, preparation of agreements, benchmark studies and economic analyses.

Qualifications
  • Graduated at the University of Amsterdam in the specialisation fiscal economics, 1987 – 1991

  • Writer / contributor to various books regarding transfer pricing.

  • Provided various transfer pricing and risk management courses for organizations like,amongst others, the University of Utrecht and the IBFD.
